BODGER’S

Unrivalled Flower Seeds

We take pleasure in presenting to our customers this season an extensive
price list, covering Flower Seeds for florist and general use.

All of the old favorites are included, as well as novelties, and this year we
have added various sorts of Flower Seeds not previously grown in the
United States, to accommodate those of our customers who wish to entrust
us with a general order.

“GROWING OUR OWN”

It is our policy to grow our own FLOWER SEEDS, personally, on our
own land. We are nearer to the complete realization of this ideal today than
we have ever been before. Besides our large acreage at El Monte, we have
established a growing station at Lompoc, California, where we grow Sweet
Peas and many spring annuals which thrive in that locality.

The advantage of this concentration of effort and consequent elimination
of conflicting standards is incalculable. To this policy of “Growing^ Our
Own,” we lay our reputation for reliability, and such distinction as we have
gained in the field of floriculture.

OUR GOLD MEDAL DAHLIA FLOWERED ZINNIAS

The Royal Horticultural Society of England recognized our DAHLIA
FLOWERED ZINNIA as a distinct advance in flower culture, by the
granting of an “Award of Merit” for the strain and a Gold Medal for the
group exhibited in the London Show in July, 1924. This recognition came
as a culmination of ten years of effort to improve and popularize the Zinnia.

We take this opportunity to thank our many friends for their liberal
patronage during the past season. We earnestly hope that the quality of
our seed and the prompt SERVICE which we are endeavoring to extend to
all will warrant a continuance of this support.

TS[ovelties

We will send you our illustrated Novelty List for 1932
next August when we hope to have many new and interesting
items including several new colors in Dahlia Flowered and
other Zinnias. It is very gratifying to notice the liberal
response to our Novelty List of the past season, especially the
following which have received world- wide distribution:

Larkspur, Miss California and Carmine King

Iceland Poppy, El Monte

Cynoglossum Amabile, Pink

Verbena Gigantea, Salmon Pink

Zinnia, Luminosa, Old Gold, Picotee Delight Salmon Rose,
Early Wonder, Crown o’ Gold, etc.

Novelties of real merit are in great demand among both
amateur and professional gardeners.

A catalog which offers such Novelties is always in demand.
The customer is willing to pay a fancy price for something
good. Such a Novelty, offered with a good photograph,
brings in money. In short,

GOOD NOVELTIES BRING PRESTIGE AND PROFITS.
OBEY THAT IMPULSE.

‘Perennial and ‘J^ock ‘Plants

The demand for Perennials and Rock Plants suitable for
the United States, Australia and other countries of similar
climates is rapidly increasing. For many seasons we have
made extensive trials and selected what we consider to be the
best for general use. For the convenience of our customers, we
have grouped together on pages 72-74 of this catalog what we
consider a standard collection of both Perennials and Rock
Plants. We call attention to the fact that these have been
grown long enough to become adapted to American climates
and we sincerely hope our customers will take advantage of the
pioneering we have done along these lines.

Photographs

ON ACCOUNT of the rapidly increasing demand
for better photographs to stimulate the sale of
the newer and more desirable flowers, both
annual and perennial, we have established a photog¬
raphy department in our organization. We are now
busy photographing good specimens of as many varie¬
ties as we can photograph at this time and will
continue to do so throughout the season as the flowers
come into full bloom. Before the season is over we
hope to have a very large and complete line of photo¬
graphs for you to select from. If you are interested in
getting photographs of varieties in this list, or any
other specimens, field views, landscapes, etc., we urge
you to get in touch with us. We are prepared to sell
the sole rights to any of our customers who may
wish for their exclusive use, providing they will give
us the order in advance. It is our belief this depart¬
ment will greatly aid our customers not only in stimu¬
lating the sale of flower seeds from year to year, but in
keeping abreast of the growing demand that is made
upon the seed trade by the buying public.

Price, 8x10 prints, $2.50 each. Full credit allowed on
any returned in good order within 10 days.

ASTERS

We specialize in the growing of Asters, having under cultivation two
hundred acres devoted to this popular Annual. Each season we offer the
newest and most improved types.

Wilt Resistant Strains

For several years we have been working on a strain of Asters resistant
to the Fusarium wilt disease which has caused so much trouble to both
amateur and professional growers in recent years. The plants may be
stricken with the wilt at any stage in their growth, from the seedling to
the flowering stage, and as yet no method of control has been discovered.
We believe prevention through highly wilt-resistant strains is the only
method of combating the disease.

For the past three years our work has been done in conjunction with the
Department of Plant Pathology of the University of Wisconsin, who are
also working along this line.

We are offering six varieties of Fusarium wilt-resistant strains of Asters
for distribution from crop 1931, 'which we believe will be practically immune
to this disease, as proven in our plantings of the past three years, and hope
to have a larger range for 1932. We feel sure that by using this seed many
disappointments due to crop failures will be eliminated.

A NEW ASTER OF EXCEPTIONAL MERIT
Giant Mammoth Paeony Flowered Type

This Aster is a fine florist strain, an addition to the Beauty type. The
flowers are of immense size, very double, borne on long, stout stems,
quite free from laterals. They are good shippers, for they keep longer
after cutting than any other Aster.

IMPROVED GIANTS OF CALIFORNIA

Characterized by the well-known Crego or Ostrich Feather type of
flower, combined with the Beauty Aster’s long, non-lateral branching
stems and sturdy habit of growth, the California Giants Double type of
Aster stands at the head of the list, not only for florists’ use, but also for
private gardens where quality is appreciated. The White is exceptionally
large and distinctive. Peach Blossom is quite distinct from any of the other
colors. It opens as a white and flushes pink when in full bloom, present¬
ing a variety of delicate peach blossom shades on the same plant. Light
Blue is an exceptionally fine florists’ flower; the color, although delicate,
has a sufficient degree of intensity to please the most critical eye. Rose
is a very rich deep shade, similar to Aster Beauty Bright Rose. The favored
florists’ colors are thus fully represented.

Improved Giants of California

Under date of August 21, 1927, the Horticultural Trade Journal of
London, England, quotes the following on Giants of California:

“Bodger’s  California  strain  of  Asters  is  ideal  for  growers  of  cut  flowers;
the flowers measure up to six inches across, packed with broad petals, and
may be grown with stems 30 inches long. It is truly an aristocrat amongst
Asters, vying with well-grown Chrysanthemums in size of flower and
length of stem.”

BEAUTY TYPE

We have noted with pleasure the steadily increasing popularity of the
Beauty Aster as a florist’s flower. The colors are good, and their keeping
qualities unsurpassed. They are excellent shippers and are rapidly super¬
seding American Branching for general use.

EARLY BEAUTY

This type has all of the characteristics of the Late Beauty Type, and is
valuable for locations where the season is too late to flower the late type
before frost, and for early forcing.

We wish to emphasize, however, that this is not an Early Aster as com¬
pared with Early Express or Queen of the Market, but earlier than the
Late Beauty Type which is the latest of all Asters. Planted at the same
time this type flowers with the Crego and American Branching. Please
note we have added one color to this type which is quite desirable.

Plants about 2 to 3 feet high, of branching habit, commencing to bloom

Mikado or Rochester

Improved Crego is far superior to the Mikado type both in regard to
quality of flowers and length of stem. We therefore recommend using
the Crego type.

Single Type

Single Giants of California

This wonderful Aster was developed from the Double Giants of California
type. The flowers are large, measuring three to four inches across, with
stems 18 to 24 inches in length. The petal has a slight twist, which adds
a piquant touch to its beauty. The white blossoms resemble Shasta
Daisies in appearance, but their greater length of stem makes them more
graceful and better adapted to florists’ use. In the garden, the Single
Giants of California add a charming note of simplicity among the fuller
types of Asters. We believe this new, single type of Aster is destined to

very popular.

ASTERS have been one of our specialties for the last twenty years.
By applying the most advanced scientific methods in our Experi¬
mental Grounds, we are able to keep our stocks up to the highest
standard. Our firm has to its credit the originating of the Beauty
type. We also assisted in popularizing the Giants of California.
The name, “Tree Aster” has been applied to both these types,
because of the height of the plants and the length of flower stems,
which make them invaluable for cut flower use.

We grow on our own farms more than two hundred acres of Asters.

ZINNIAS

BODGER’S GOLD MEDAL DAHLIA FLOWERED

In July, 1924, the Royal Horticultural Society of England granted an
" Award of Merit” for the strain, and a Gold Medal for the group of
Dahlia Flowered Zinnias exhibited in the London Show. This official
recognition of the strain meant much to its originator, our late president,
John Bodger, who had put forth the best efforts of his last years in perfecting
this type.

A silver medal awarded by the Royal Horticultural Society in August,
1927, is evidence that the Dahlia Flowered Zinnia is maintaining its place
among worth while strains.

The large size, fullness of petals, extraordinary color range, and good
keeping qualities of this flower have all contributed to its popularity. It is
easily grown, and keeps well when cut. It is at present immune from disease.
Equally good as a garden flower and as a florist’s specialty, its popularity
should increase with years. It has been truthfully called ‘‘A NEW FLOWER
FOR THE PEOPLE.”

A Florist’s Moneymaker

This type is proving a good forcer among the florists. Polar Bear is forced
and used extensively as a bunching flower for Mother’s Day, while Ex¬
quisite, Old Rose, Golden Dawn, Oriole, Crimson Monarch, Luminosa and
Canary Bird are specially recommended to force as desirable colors for
florists for early Spring trade.

To assist in visualizing the true color, we have inserted, parenthetically,
Ridgeway’s Color Chart descriptions.

The following varieties are reselected, field-grown stock and are greatly
improved over previous offerings:

which does not fade in the sun.

OLD GOLD (New) Glowing, burnished deep and lighter shades of

GOLDEN DAWN — A beautiful golden yellow of immense size
and good form. Very attractive.

.YOUTH — A beautiful soft rose self; valuable for forcing and a
good shipper, having better lasting qualities than any other
variety we grow.

.EXQUISITE — By far the most pleasing of our collection. Truly
DAHLIA flowered as regards form and size. Color light rose
with center a deep rose. (Tyrian Rose.)

.OLD ROSE — This is adequately described by its name, as it is
of the real Old Rose Shade; it is large, and for charm and beauty
we consider it ranks next to Exquisite.

.ILLUMINATION — Similar to Exquisite, but a striking self color
of deep rose. (Tyrian Rose).

.GIANT ATTRACTION — A distinct shade of brick red, which
forms an immense ball of color when in full bloom.

.GOLDEN STATE — A very rich orange yellow (Cadmium). Yellow
in the bud, turning to an attractive orange when in full bloom.

.CRIMSON MONARCH — By far the largest and best of the red
shades. Flowers often eight inches in diameter. Plants very
vigorous. A marvelous production of extraordinary merit.

.SCARLET FLAME — A large, beautiful, bright scarlet, with a
delightful blending of orange throughout the petal. This is not
a bicolor.

.METEOR — A rich, glowing deep red (Spinel Red) and the darkest
of all the red shades. Fine form, with good depth of petal. Very
large and more floriferous than other reds.

.LEMON BEAUTY — This is next to Crimson Monarch in size
and form. It may be described as a golden yellow on brown.
Decidedly a pastel shade, and should be in every collection.

.ORIOLE — We consider this the most beautiful of its class. It is
an immense orange and gold bicolor, changing slightly as it ages,
but at all times worthy of the beautiful bird for which it is named.

.DREAM — A fine, deep lavender, turning to purple (Mallow
Purple) a new, desirable shade in Zinnias.

.PURPLE PRINCE — A fine, deep purple (Rhodanthe Purple)
large and well-formed.

.POLAR BEAR — A very large pure white, the best white yet seen
in Zinnias. True Dahlia form.

.CANARY BIRD — A delicate shade of primrose — very large and
holds its color well until out of bloom.

GIANT MAMMOTH TYPE
or California Giants

We introduced this type in 1926, being convinced it was a type that
would become a favorite. This is a mutation from the Dahlia Flowered
type and the general approval in the past has encouraged us to go further
into the development of this for florists’ and general use. The great
advantage of this type is that the very large flowers are of enormous size
and flat, getting away from the conical type of the Giants and eliminating
the stiffness that has been so objectionable in Zinnias in the past. The
flowers from the time they open are attractive, making them a good cut
flower from the early bud until they are in full bloom. They are twice the
size of the ordinary Giants.

PICOTEE TYPE

The Picotee Zinnia, introduced by us in 1919, differs from other types in
that each petal is outlined by a contrasting color which harmonizes with
the body of the flower. The form and color range are similar to the Giant
type, but the size is between the Giant and Pumila types. They are useful
to provide variety in that portion of the garden devoted to Zinnias, but
they are especially adapted for use as cut flowers. They reproduce about

ZINNIAS — Continued

Elegans, Lilliput

Small Double Flowers for Borders

In recent years we have devoted much time to reselecting and “trueing
up” this type of Zinnias, with the result that they are replacing the
Dwarf Pumila type for bedding and cut flower purposes. Salmon Rose
and Crimson Gem are especially useful to florists. We recommend the
following collection, all distinct colors.

This is a low border plant sometimes called creeping miniature Zinnia.

For the information of our new customers we will
state we have devoted eighteen years to the improvement
of existing types of Zinnias, and the originating of new and
popular types; such as, PICOTEE, VICTORY QUILLED,
CALIFORNIA GIANTS and DAHLIA FLOWERED.
The rapidly increasing demand for these improved types
will necessitate our planting over three hundred acres this
year.

This season we have devoted ten acres of our Experi¬
mental Grounds exclusively to the development of our new
varieties of Zinnias. By using the most up-to-date
scientific methods we are not only enabled to keep our
present novelties up to standard but are in a position to
put on the market important new developments in this
popular flower. Every year we are adding new colors,
increasing the size and perfecting the form of the Zinnia.

Bodger’s Zinnia Seed will assure you satisfaction.
The discriminating buyer knows that the best is
always the cheapest in the end.

CARNATION
Chabaud’s Giant Double

Our plantings this year were so exceptionally fine that we again lay
stress on the importance of listing this type of Carnation. By special
selection we have greatly increased the size and otherwise improved this
strain. In our judgment it is the best Carnation now on the market,

HP We wish to advise that we have the sole American agency for
these famous Carnations which are produced and sold in such quantities
by Mr. Englemann on the London market. We are growing these on
our farm from seed produced on the plants, the flowers from which won
the sweepstake prize at the Chelsea Show in 1925. They reproduce from
seed very satisfactorily and throw better than 80% double flowers.

has met with favor, and have added to this variety three new shades
which we think are worthy of trying out, especially the Cornelia.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

We have developed what we believe will prove
a meritorious novelty — a double sweet - scented
Nasturtium — to be known as

NASTURTIUM BODGERI

FLORE PLENO

A bouquet of these attractive golden-yellow flowers,
distinctly double in form, will fill a room with pleasing
fragrance, besides being a delight to the beauty-loving
eye. Also, the stems are rather stiff, and long enough to
be bunched, something new for Nasturtiums.

In fact, we believe the new race is as distinct an ad¬
vance over the old type of Nasturtiums as the Dahlia-
Flowered Zinnia is over the original type, or Spencer
Sweet Peas over Grandiflora.

This new NASTURTIUM will be offered to the trade
for the first time in our Fall Novelty List.

_ New Giant Caucasica Hybrids (Isaac

House Strain) _ _ _ 2.25 7.50 25.00

We introduced this wonderful improvement in perennial
Seabiosa and recent reports lead us to believe they are
making an accounting for themselves as a florists’ cut flower.
They are more vigorous in their plant growth, having longer and
stouter stems with the average size of the flowers more than a
third larger than the best strain of Caucasica we have heretofore
seen. The outer edges are ruffled and fringed and the colors range
from a very light lavender to a dark blue, giving the range of color
necessary for general florists’ use. We highly recommend this
strain not only for florists’ use but for the retail business where
fancy stocks are required.

SCABIOSA COLUMBARIA
ANTHEMIFOLIA

This is a South African form of the European Seabiosa and
although reminiscent of Caucasica, is a distinct type. There is
a decided place for this on the perennial list, as well as on the
florists’ cut-flower list. It can be briefly described as a hardy,
low growing perennial with fine, light-green foliage, some of the
flowers measuring from two to two and a half inches across with
short, compact petals, borne on long, slender but strong stems.
It is proving to be a valuable florists’ cut flower. We offer this in two
favorite colors— pink and lavender. We consider Columbaria a
valuable addition to the perennial list, especially the pink shade
which is a new color for Perennial Seabiosa.

Mammoth Early Branching Nice

1.00

3.50

This variety is now recognized as the most valuable of all Stocks for
cutting purposes and the most popular for general use.

If  sown  early,  they  come  into  flower  as  early  as  Dwarf  Ten  Week  varieties;
the flowers are larger, and the branching habit renders them invaluable
for florists.

_ Early Wonder, extra choice mixed .85 2.50 8.00

Since introducing this novelty from Europe some years
ago we have concentrated on its acclimatization to Ameri¬
can conditions, with the result that we now have an extra
early forcing strain which blooms 85 to 90 days from the
date of planting. With us, seed planted Nov. 1 produces
flowers Jan. 25. The flowers are equal to the Perennial
Double in size and every respect. The strain was pro¬
duced by crossing the Perennial Double with the Early
Annual, and should thrive and bloom profusely in warm
and dry countries where formerly only Early Annual
Singles were bloomed successfully.
